Icy and Sam
Marco Polo Hotel Wedding

Fine-Art, Standard & Snap Wedding Photography
Over the years we have become friends with lots of other wedding photographers throughout Hong Kong.
A free Saturday in September is incredibly rare for us so when our good friend Sophia invited one of our team along to capture a Marco Polo Hotel wedding we jumped at the chance.
We hadn’t worked at the Marco Polo Hotel before so it was a good opportunity to get familiar with the venue ahead of Tim and Katrina’s wedding later in the year.
It was also interesting for us to not be the main photographer for once. This allowed us to take a few more risks with our shots and gave us a new perspective on a wedding day.
Why The Marco Polo Hotel Wedding Venue?
Icy and Sam chose to use the Marco Polo Hotel for all aspects of their wedding day which made for a really relaxed atmosphere to their day.
Sometimes there is a lot of travelling around on a wedding day which can detract from the day itself. However, when a wedding is all in one location it can mean there is a lot more time for interacting with guests and loads more to photograph.
The hotel benefits from some spectacular views across Victoria Harbour and is located within walking distance of some fabulous wedding photography locations.
Kowloon Park, The Space Museum and Hong Kong Museum of Art are all on the doorstep of this very central hotel and are all places we like to use for wedding photos.
As with most of the couples we photograph in Hong Kong, Icy and Sam had already had a pre wedding shoot. This meant they weren’t too fussed about staged photos on their wedding day and we could focus on documentary type images.
We utilised the car park at the venue which was lined with flags along the harbour front. This location made for some cool shots of the bridal party with the groomsmen looking especially sharp in their tuxedos.
The Marco Polo wedding venue benefits from a variety of different function rooms and each one offers its own unique benefits. Icy and Sam chose the Centenary Ballroom for their wedding Ceremony and their choice couldn’t of been better.
The Centenary Ballroom is elegantly decorated with glistening chandeliers and yellow and white tones. The room benefits from a truly unique feature whereby the double doors to the rear open out on to the harbour quayside.
Choosing this venue for a Marco Polo Hotel wedding means you can accommodate around 350 guests which made it the perfect choice for Sam and Icy’s big day.
How did their Marco Polo wedding take shape?
Morning
Preparations for Icy and Sam’s Marco Polo Hotel wedding started early with make up arriving at 5 a.m.
Once we turned up at the hotel we managed to capture some very intimate moments between Icy and her parents. We love documenting these moments as they naturally unfold and there wasn’t a dry eye in sight.
A wedding day is a truly special occasion for the whole family and not just the couple and these are the stories we love to tell with our wedding photography.
Door Games
Once we had captured some cool portraits of the groomsmen it was time for them to have a bit of fun with the traditional Chinese door games.
This is always a joyous event to capture and the groomsmen really seemed to enjoy what the bridesmaids had planned for them. A particular highlight for us was seeing them dressed in clown wigs and pink shorts.
When it came to capturing Sam tell Icy how much he loves her from behind a half closed door things got really emotional. Icy couldn’t hold back the tears and once again everyone at the wedding was overcome with emotion. It really was a special day to capture.
Tea Ceremony
The traditional Chinese Tea Ceremony followed which always makes for good photographs. These shots always demonstrate the special bond between parents and their children and we always strive to document these moments in the best possible way.
We quickly headed outside where the bridal party threw rice over Icy and Sam. Traditionally this is meant to protect the bride from evil spirits that might be watching the house. As it happens they went back in to the hotel to complete the second part of the Ceremony but the tradition still holds true.
The Wedding Ceremony
After a few fun shots of the bride and groom it was time for Icy to change in to her white dress. She looked amazing as she entered the Centenary Ballroom where the happy couple exchanged vows.
The Ceremony room was decorated to a really high standard and the cake (which towered over the couple) looked absolutely spectacular.
We can’t wait to be back
Special thanks goes out to Sofia for inviting us along to capture this wedding along side her.
We got some invaluable experience at this Marco Polo Hotel wedding that we can use when we shoot here later in the year.
The venue is really beautiful and its location to nearby wedding photography hotspots makes it ideal for couples looking to get married in Hong Kong.
We simply can’t wait to be back here for Tim and Katrina’s wedding and have some really good ideas for some stellar photography.
Below are some of our favourite shots that we captured from this marvellous Marco Polo wedding.
